This year’s GITEX was a resounding success and a strong statement for all of the naysayers who hail the event’s decline with more than 100,000 visitors of the five-day event. More than just an event to see and be seen, this year manufacturers and partners alike benefited from constructive one to one meetings, promising business leads and exciting messages from some top quality speakers as usual.
The layout of the event was different from previous editions, with all of the keynote speeches taking place in the Za’abeel Halls. Whilst not as close to the action as before this set up allowed for event more exhibitors to showcase their latest and greatest offerings, with a dedicated network and security section, and federal government exhibitions focusing on the latest government initiatives including Smart Dubai and paperless government (‘from paper to paperless’ is their slogan).
A key focus of this year's Gitex edition, was of course 5G, the super-fast fifth-generation cellular network technology promising download speeds 10 to 20 times faster than we have now. Other highlights for us were to hear fascinating insights on different facets of the technology industry, from some impressive keynote speakers including whistleblower Tyler Shultz (who exposed fraud at biotech startup Theranos), Ben Goertzel of SingularityNet (Chariman of the Artificial General Intelligence Society and leader of the team that developed the AI software of the Sophia robot at Hanson Robotics) and Ronaldo Mouchawar the CEO and founder of SOUQ.com. Of particular note, Mike Sutcliff, the man behind the digital transformation of Accenture, who shared a message of personalization, and how it is more important than ever before in the customer experience.
As well as this it is always a delight to see all the amazing demonstrations of new technology entering the market, including communication and collaboration platforms for education (helping you track your child’s school bus to and from school) Dubai Police’s floating police station for island dwellers, the Lazareth floating motorcycle, LIFT Aircraft’s Hexa and RTA’s free wifi on public buses (in preparation for the upcoming World Expo 2020) to name a few.
Last but not least, as part of our initiative in the Middle East, we hosted an exclusive networking lunch for channel partners, clients and special guest Nilesh Khalko, the CEO of Sharaf DG, which sparked some interesting discussions around where technology retail is going.
