ESG Takes Centre Stage: Ecolabels Becoming Essential for PC Market Success

CONTEXT latest market intelligence data shows a significant shift towards sustainability in PC, with ecolabels like EPEAT and TCO Certified moving from optional extras to critical components of product strategy across key regions, both mature markets like in Europe and in developing markets like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Failure to integrate robust ESG credentials is no longer just a missed opportunity – it risks impacting market share.

In Europe's Top 5 markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK), the demand for greener PCs is undeniable. In Q1 2025, an impressive 82.5% of PCs sold through achieved the EPEAT Gold rating. This marks a substantial increase from previous periods, in 2023 Q1, only 52% was EPEAT gold rating, highlighting a rapid acceleration in the adoption of higher environmental standards.

Furthermore, TCO Certified products are gaining significant traction. Our data indicates that approximately 48% of PCs sold in these key European countries during Q1 2025 carried the TCO Certified label. (Note: These figures exclude products where confidentiality rules prevent disclosure).

This trend is propelled by converging forces: increasingly stringent public sector procurement requirements demanding certified sustainable products, growing corporate ESG commitments, and rising consumer awareness driving demand for eco-conscious technology.

International Spotlight: Saudi Arabia Leads the Charge

The trend extends beyond Europe, with some regions demonstrating even higher adoption rates. Saudi Arabia stands out as a leader in embracing sustainable technology. An estimated 90% of PCs sold in the distribution market of the Kingdom in Q1 2025 were EPEAT Gold rated.

This remarkable figure appears linked to the product mix prevalent in the Saudi market, which leans heavily towards newer notebook models often designed with higher ESG ratings and certifications. Underscoring this, 8 out of the top 10 best-selling PC products in Saudi Arabia during the period were TCO Certified, contributing to an overall TCO Certified market share of around 56%.

The Competitive Imperative: Sustainability is Non-Negotiable

The data is clear: integrating sustainability and achieving recognised ecolabels like EPEAT and TCO Certified is rapidly becoming table stakes in the competitive PC landscape. For OEMs, distributors, resellers, and retailers, understanding and proactively embracing sustainable technology is crucial. It not only meets evolving market demands from public, corporate, and consumer segments but also represents a significant competitive advantage in an increasingly eco-aware global market. Prioritising ESG is no longer just good practice; it's essential for future growth and relevance.
