The pace of change in consumer technology is ever-increasing with new devices, new routes-to-market, new partners and new competitors. Accurate, real-time data about what consumers want to buy, sometimes even before they realise it themselves, is critical. Picking, pricing and promoting the right product at the right time has a huge commercial impact.

We invite retailers to join one of our Sales Panels and journey with us in #newretailthinking, sharing new approaches to retail business practices.

Smart Home Consumer Survey – EMEA & Latam

The CONTEXT Smart Home Consumer Survey – June 2017

Building on the success of the first and second Smart Home surveys published in 2015 and 2016, CONTEXT has published a third survey in June 2017 which incorporates new questions to understand what is motivating consumers (or not) to purchase smart home products. There are now 31 questions and 13 countries have been included in the survey – France, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain for the first time, Sweden, Netherlands, Turkey, Russia, and 4 countries in Latam – Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. 6,500 consumers across the 13 countries were polled in this survey.

For the second time CONTEXT has published a barometer of smart home attitudes in which Germany leads Europe with a barometer score of 67/100 and the average for EMEA is 40/100.

CONTEXT has brought together three Smart Home Associations – the Smart Homes & Buildings Association in the UK, the Fédération Française de Domotique in France and the Smart Home Initiative in Germany. Also in this group are representatives of the Smart Home Industry – Dixons, Maplin & Euronics, the international retailers, Tech Data, Deutsche Telekom and D-Link. The surveys have been constructed with the input and advice of these companies, known as the Smart Home Research Group.

Methodology

The data in this report is derived from a consumer survey of 6,500 people in the thirteen countries mentioned above. Within each country 500 people completed an online survey about their views, opinions and habits on smart homes and smart home products. The sample within each country was designed to be representative of gender, age and income and was also geographically representative. Surveying was undertaken by Conlumino in February 2017. The questionnaire was devised with the input of the Smart Home Research Group, formed by CONTEXT in order to promote research that will help vendors and retailers track the embryonic Smart Homes market.

Smart Home Consumer Survey - LATAM

The CONTEXT Smart Home Consumer Survey – January 2017

In 2017, CONTEXT is expanding its Smart Home Survey to encompass 14 countries across 3 continents.

The LATAM survey collects the views of 2,000 consumers from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile – economies which represent a combined GDP of USD 4.4tn.

Survey questions were updated with the assistance of the Smart Home research group and local LATAM industry players, and took into account the great changes which have taken place in the smart home landscape between 2016 and 2017, notably the growing importance of voice control.

Methodology

The data in this report is derived from a 30-question survey of 2,000 consumers. Five hundred people from each country completed an online survey about their views and opinions on, and use of, smart homes and smart-home products. The sample within each country was designed to be representative of gender, age and income, and was also geographically representative. Surveying was undertaken by Conlumino in January 2017.

The questionnaire was devised with the input of local LATAM industry players and the Smart Home Research Group, formed by CONTEXT in order to promote research that will help vendors and retailers track the embryonic Smart Homes market. This group brings together three of Europe's leading Smart Home Associations – the UK's Smart Home & Buildings Association, France's Fédération Française de Domotique and Germany's Smart Home Initiative Deutschland. They were joined by six leading players in the smart home market – Euronics, D-Link, Deutsche Telekom, Dixons Carphone, Maplin and Tech Data.

Cyber Essentials at Home

The Cyber Essentials leaflet is a short overview of how you can keep yourself and your Smart Home safe from cyber attack, help you in your use of the internet and to keep smart devices secure. The inspiration for this leaflet comes from the UK Government Cyber Essentials scheme, defining the minimum UK business ought to be doing to protect themselves and work by SmartHome Initiative Deutschland e.V.

Smart Home Security Summit

For the first time, brought together by the Smart Homes & Buildings Association and KTN, consumer organisations, retailers, manufacturers, standard-setters and Government will examine in a holistic approach what needs to be done to build trust in Smart Home Systems. CONTEXT has brought together and will be chairing the Retail section of this conference.

Growth in the sale of smart home products and services is happening, but there is a barrier, namely the real or perceived risk of security breaches leading to loss of private data through interference in smart home devices. To achieve breakthrough, the Smart Home industry needs to address these challenges comprehensively.

This conference is a "must attend" event for people in this sector - at the end of the conference you will have a clear idea of what actions you and your organisation will need to undertake to work towards safe, secure and cyber-secure smart homes and buildings.
