1 May 2008 – 1000GB (1 terabyte) became the best-selling storage capacity in NAS (Network Attached Storage) products in February 2008 - maintaining the lead through to March, in the same month when 500GB lost the top slot it had held since July 2007, according to figures released today by Context, covering UK, France and Germany.
Context SalesWatch Distribution data for NAS shows that in February 2008 1TB capacity had 30% share, up from 23% achieved in January. In March 2008 1TB was still the best-selling capacity, albeit with 28% share - down 2 points over the previous month. On the other hand, 500GB, which held 37% share in January, registered 25% and 23% in February and March respectively, and slipped to second position in those two months (see table 1).
The fastest-growing storage capacity, however, was 2000GB (2TB): its share in both December 2007 and January 2008 was 9%, but increased to 12% in February and to as high as 23% in March, sharing second position with 500GB.
In terms of ASP (Average Selling Price), both 1TB and 2TB registered massive drops since December 2007, whereas the ASP of 500GB has been virtually stable since July 2007, when it was Euro 167 (excl. tax), compared to Euro 163 registered in March 2008.
1TB NAS systems, on the other hand, dropped from Euro 536 in December 2007 to Euro 369 in March 2008, whereas the ASP of 2TB NAS dropped from Euro 842 in December to Euro 663 in March (tables 2a and 2b).
