250GB HDD tops European Notebook space in August for first time

18 September 2008 - The top-selling HDD capacity for PC notebooks in 6 Western European countries became 250GB for the first time in August 2008, with 23% share, outselling 160GB and 120GB, which registered 22% and 21% respectively (see chart 1). Data released today by Context, covering distribution sales for France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the UK, also highlights 80GB in fourth position with 10% (stable over the previous month), while 320GB almost doubled market share sequentially from 5% in July to 8% in August.

The August trend was driven particularly by sales in the Volume channel*, where the share of 250GB HDD in notebooks jumped from 18% in July to 30% in August, with 160GB and 120GB in second and third position with 19% and 18% share respectively (chart 2).

However, in the Value channel** 250GB was still trailing behind 160GB and 120GB in August. Both 160GB and 120GB share the top position with 24% share each, followed by 250GB with 18% share, only 1 percentage point up from July (chart 3).
